Asbestos deaths in Forest more than national average

It has been seen that in the Forest of Dean, deaths due to asbestos are more above the national average.

In the last five years, terminal cancer has led to about 24 deaths in the district and was caused by the poisonous material.

In the Forest, about 3.7 per 100,000 people die from this type of cancer, which is called mesothelioma. The national average whereas is 2.5.

In the next five years, there will be a rise in the number of people dying from this cancer.

Forest of Dean District Council's health champion, councillor Frank Baynham, said, "I think it's got a lot to do with the kind of industry of the area. Places like the Forest of Dean, where there's traditionally been a lot of manual labour, are always more likely to have higher figures than somewhere like the Cotswolds."

Association of Personal Injury Lawyers has been campaigning for financial safety that should be initiated for people who have had this disease and the figures have been obtained by this not-for-profit group also called APIL.

The worst is that after about 10 years or so of inhaling asbestos, the onset of symptoms often comes.
